HIPAA FAQ #1 : Why can't I see my spouse/dependent when I sign in to my medical coverage website? Are they enrolled?

Technology can be a great asset when it comes to access to your medical coverage information. Carriers are making information more accessible by allowing members sign in to their websites and view their personal medical information, find in-network providers for their plans, and even order new ID cards. However, this has raised question and concern for members who log in for the first time and cannot view their spouse or dependent as a part of their plan coverage.

In order to comply with HIPAA regulations, carriers can only list underage dependents’ medical information on the insured adult’s information page. For instance, if you are the enrolled employee with family coverage for yourself, your spouse, your 19 year old child, and your 17 year old child, you would only be able to view the coverage for yourself and your 17 year old child. Although they are on your plan, your spouse’s and 19 year old child’s medical information is protected by HIPAA. Some carriers do allow your overage dependents to create their own sign in and unlock their privacy so that you may view this information in the future, though.

If you are still concerned that everyone that should be on your plan is enrolled, you can call the 800 number on your ID card to verify the enrollments.
